The Healing Benefits of Earthing

Getting Back to Nature

After an exhausting few days last week, I headed down to the beach to get some fresh air and connect with the earth. I dived in the water and immediately felt at ease, present, energized, and an abundance of gratitude.

This made me realize we don’t get outdoors nearly enough. As a society we spend so much time inside stuck in front of the television, the computer or our phones. When we do get outdoors we usually have shoes on and a lot of the time a cell phone in hand.

It is so important to make time to disconnect from technology and get outdoors as often as possible, to get grounded, to breath in fresh air and to soak up the natural sunlight.

Earthing or Grounding is simply getting outside and connecting your bare feet to the earth. This could mean walking around bare foot in your back yard or just sitting with your feet connected to the earth or finding a nice comfy patch to lay down and relax.

When we connect our bare skin to the earth we absorb the earth's free flowing electrons. I learned about this a couple of years ago after reading a book called Earthing by Clinton Ober. The book made perfect sense to me, I have never been a huge fan of wearing shoes and I always feel better after being outdoors.

If you live near the ocean go for a walk along the beach in the morning, take a swim, or just sit in the sand and bury your feet in. If you have a park close by go for walk and sit down under a nice tree and connect your bare feet to  the earth.

If it's easier, step outside your door into your back yard bare foot, just sit and be present. Take in all of the sounds and smells around you. Feel the grass and the dirt under your feet.

Make the time to get outdoors and get grounded. If you feel strapped for time eat your breakfast and your lunch outside. Just 15 minutes per day outdoors is better than no time at all.

Get outside now and see how it feels, take note of how you feel before, while you are earthing, and how you feel after.

Don’t forget to take your shoes off, and enjoy!
